Our Initial Care policy covers each new condition for up to 42 days. For an accident or injury, that’s from the day it happened. For an illness, it’s from the day your pet first showed signs of being unwell – even if they didn’t see a vet until later. Cover also stops if you reach your cover limit sooner. It’s a time-limited policy – chronic or ongoing conditions are not covered beyond the initial 42-day treatment period, and pre-existing conditions aren’t covered. It’s designed for new injuries and the initial investigation and treatment of a new illness.

Why only 42 days?
It might seem like a strange number, but there’s thinking behind it. As a team of animal-loving vets, we created Initial Care for those moments when something new crops up, such as an injury or a sudden illness, and you want your pet seen, cared for and investigated. It’s not designed for long-term or ongoing conditions, so you’re not paying for cover you may not need. It’s just one of the ways we can help protect your pet, and your pocket.

Choose your cover level
We offer two policies for dogs and cats, built around the vet bills that matter most:
- Critical Care – emergency surgery and hospitalisation when your pet’s life is at risk, including orthopaedic and spinal surgery, from admission to discharge. No excess to pay.
- Initial Care – vet treatment for illness and injury for up to 42 days per condition.
Both policies come with a choice of three cover levels. Each has a limit per condition and an overall limit for all claims in the policy year.
Both policies also include free 24/7 video vet advice with VidiVet and emergency cover in EU countries for up to 30 days per trip (60 days a year).
Neither policy covers pre-existing conditions.
